DisneyQuest Officially Closing July 3rd! The NBA Experience On Its Way.
Well, it finally came true. DisneyQuest is officially closing forever on July 3rd to ~ eventually ~ make way for The NBA Experience! Originially announced in 2015 to much shock and confusion, the project went silent only months later and was thought to have died. And yet, here we are a year later, again surprised to find out the project is alive and well. Here’s the official announcement from Disney Parks Blog below:
Our multi-year transformation of Disney Springs is continuing, and as you know, we’re bringing new experiences to the West Side Neighborhood, including The NBA Experience at Walt Disney World Resort. Today, we wanted to share an update that to make way for this basketball-themed experience, the West Side area will be undergoing changes – beginning with the closure of DisneyQuest on July 3, 2017.
Until July 3, DisneyQuest will continue to offer a great interactive experience for all guests. Disney fans of classic arcade game favorites and virtual worlds featured at the indoor theme park are invited to come out and enjoy the experiences.
As we’ve previously shared, The NBA Experience at Walt Disney World Resort will be a one-of-a-kind basketball-themed experience featuring hands-on activities that put guests of all ages right in the middle of NBA game action. There will be immersive NBA video productions and numerous interactive experiences, as well as a restaurant and a retail store.

Details are still very sparse on the project and no official timeline for construction or opening has been announced, which isn’t surprising. Disney doesn’t exactly move quickly when it comes to construction projects. The Studios Backlot Tour shuttered in 2014 to only sit dormant for two years before it was even torn down.
When the project originally went quiet, there were multiple rumors and reports as to why; most retained Disney and the NBA just couldn’t come to an agreement on terms as to how to repurpose the DisneyQuest building. Some believe the NBA wanted to completely gut the DisneyQuest building, if not fully demolish and build from the ground up. But Disney didn’t want to begin any major construction projects of that caliber when Disney Springs has almost completely been completed, especially when the area isn’t covered behind a garage. Whatever happened before, it’s resolved now! Who knows how long it’ll take for us to get more details. Are you excited to see The NBA Experience coming to Disney Springs? Sound off in the comments.
